Careshell packed in nylon nets was arrayed on a tidal flat in Toba, Mie Prefecture, Japan, and its effects on the abundance of the short-neck clam Ruditapes philippinarum were experimentally tested. Although the individual density of the clam （shell length ＞ 3 mm） in the Careshell plots was comparable with that in controls, large clams （shell length ＞ 10 mm） occurred only in the Careshell plots at 8 months after setting. Also, juvenile density （shell length ＜ 3 mm） in the Careshell plots was temporarily higher than that in controls. At this site, an increase in oscillatory flow velocity was observed, which would be produced by fishing and pleasure boats. However, the shear stress of both the current and oscillatory flow velocity was always lower than the critical drag force of substrates as well as that of clams.
