We estimated the fry-to-adult survival rates of wild and hatchery chum salmon in the Chitose River, Hokkaido, Japan, where the otoliths of all hatchery-released fry were thermally marked. The production of outmigrating wild fry was estimated by employing a rotary screw trap to determine the ratio of otolith thermally marked hatchery fish to non-marked wild fish, multiplied by the total number of hatchery-released fry. The numbers of returning wild and hatchery origin adults were estimated at the weir by identifying the ratio of the otolith thermally marked hatchery fish to the non-marked wild fish. The fry-to-adult survival rates (2006 and 2008-2011 brood years) of the wild fish were estimated as 0.22%-0.86%, whereas those of hatchery fish were estimated as 0.17%-1.29%.
