A plot of silicic acid, phosphate and dissolved total inorganic nitrogen against the apparent oxygen utilization (AOU) showed that an increase (dissolution) in nutrient concentrations was accompanied by dissolved oxygen consumption, and it was suggested that Redfield stoichiometry could be applied to the estimation of the nutrient regeneration proportions. The nutrient regeneration proportions (N:P:Si = 10: 1 :59) calculated based on the relationship between nutrients and AOU deviated significantly from the canonical Redfield-Brzezinski proportions (16: 1: 15).
