内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 The Oyashio current composes a western part of the subarctic circulation in the northern north Pacific Ocean. Continuity of volume transport from the East Kamchatka current to the Oyashio current has been recognized in several reports. However some differences are found in their quality of the water having densities less than sigma-T of 27. 6. The deep extent of cold water having temperatures less than 3˚C of the Oyashio is attributed to the mixing with the cold saline mid water from the Sea of Okhotsk. Extremely cold water which is formed during ice growth on the northwestren shelf area in the Sea of Okhotsk, has the density to be able to sink into the intermadiate layer in the Okhotsk Basin. In addition, the distinctive halocline and oxycline of the Kamchatka current are diminished along the east side of the southern Kuril islands, and water with relatively higher oxygen concentration extends to a deep. Such differences mentioned above are caused by the extensive mixing generated by tidal current passing through the openings of the Kuril islands. Cold less saline waters in the surface layer are formed by consumption of latent heat during drift ice melt, which come out through the passes of the southern Kuril islands and flow southwestward along the east coast of Hokkaido island as the coastal Oyashio. Thus the Sea of Okhotsk and Kuril islands act on the role of transformation from the East Kamchatka current to the Oyashio current. So the Oyashio current should be defined the southern sea side water from the central kuril islands to the northeast off Japan. The cold sea condition below the seasonal thermocline can preserve the organic matters on the bottom of the continental shelf all through the summer, that is as a cold storage of foods for benthonic feeders.
