| 内容記述 | The present paper discusses temporal and spatial fluctuations of the sea surface temperature (SST) in the whole of the Japan Sea based on the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis. The data used were monthly mean SST at ninety-five 1° latitude x 1° longitude grid points from 1951 to 1992. The first, second and third EOF explain 48%, 13% and 7% of the total variances, respectively. The first EOF shows a simultaneous rise and fall fluctuation everywhere and suggests a regime shift from warm to cold periods in the early 1960s. The second EOF reveals a seesaw fluctuation between northeastern and southwestern waters bounded by the central region and suggests an approximate ten-year periodicity. The third EOF represents a seesaw fluctuation between both sides of the Japan Islands and the Asian Continent. Also, the first three EOFs show approximately six year and two to four year periodicity. The long-term fluctuation of SST in the Japan Sea reflects the strong winter cooling in the mixing layer. | |||||||||||
