内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 The salinity front which ranges between 31.6 and 32.6% draws a sharp distinction between the considerably lowered salinity water over the shallow shelf area and the higher salinity water in the central Bering Sea. The salinity front is found in nearly the same sea area along the continental slope between Cape Navarin and Unalaska Island during the summers of 1964, 1965 and 1966. The extremely diluted core water (E D C W) is found south off St. Lawrence Island as an isolated state with a minimum salinity of 30.3%. It is clearly distinguished by the nearly circumnavigated salinity front which ranges between 30.8 and 31.0%. This is supposed to be generated by the convergence effect of the low salinity surface water in an anticyclonic gyral at the shear zone on a right boundary layer of northwestward flow along the continental slope. That is, ED C W means the result of overflow of diluted coastal water caused by the Yukon River, Kuskokwim River and other rivers along the coasts of the Alaska Peninsula. The highest salinity distribution is found at almost the central part of the Aleutian Islands. This is supplied by the northward intrusion of the North Pacific water across relatively wider channels as Amchitka pass. This possible evidence of northward intrusion is endorsed as a counterpart of the Second Branch of the Warm Water Intrusion by Kitano (1969). Fig. 2-a shows the salinity distribution along section II which crossed almost the central part of the Bering Sea over the continental shelf and the slope. The bottom of E D C W marked by the isohaline 32.0, is relatively shallow being as deep as 50 m. The primary salinity front is found near station 104 as a western rim of ED C W and the secondary salinity front is found near stations 14 and 15. The higher salinity water more than 33.0% is intruded further eastward in a creeping state along the bottom of the continental slope as demonstrated by the warm water intrusion in the thermal structure. In general, well mixed homogeneous water of nearly 33.2% is extended in the central Bering Sea as deep as nearly 100m in contrast to the spreading of the shallow diluted water of EDCW in the shelf area. The halocline with a salinity difference between 33.4% and 33.8% is extended in the intermediate layer between 200m and 300m depth. It is nearly coincidented with the mean dering tendency of the positive thermocline. The cross section from station 8 to 13 is occupied during June 3 to June 6. The observation was repeated again nearly along the same section during July 20 to Aug. 1. The rate of salinity increase or decrease is calculated by (S1-S2)/Tx104=I basing on the data obtained at both sections; S1 is the salinity at each stations 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13, and S2 is the salinity at paired stations after T days later. The distribution chart of I value is presented in Fig. 4. The shaded parts mean the domain of salinity increase with the anomaly more than +20 in the intermediate layer under the paired stations 8, 9, 10 and 12, 13. These deomains of salinity increase reflects an evidence of halocline uplifting by alternative meandering. The surface layer less than 50 m in depth is characterized by the rapid decrease of salinity of the order of I value between -20 and -60. It is generally induced by the overflow of ice melted water and diluted coastal water over the surface layer.
