内容記述 In the present paper, the experiment on the duration of fertility of spawned eggs and the sperm of the abalone, Haliotis discus hannai INo, as related to the temperature, is dealt with. The spawning of adults which had been reared by the regular method with an average water temperature of 22.4˚C was induced by the method of 2,537A U.V. irradiated sea water. The materials for the experiment were obtained from one male and one female which spawned at the same time. The spawned eggs of about 2,000 were put into a glass tube with 50 ml of sea water soon after spawning. Glass tubes with sea water were conditioned at five levels of definite temperatures from 9˚C to 26˚C. The fresh sperm water introduced into five glass beakers were adjusted at the designed temperature within 30 minutes, and in such condition they were preserved until the experiment started. All the materials preserved at the designed temperature were fertilized at 23˚C and the fertilization rate was observed. Treatment started 70 minutes after spawning and this way of treatment was done each hour. The results are as follows. As for the sexual materials preserved at 26.2˚C, the high fertility as shown by the fertilization rate of more than 80 percent was observed only at the first treatment. The fertility dropped rapidly thereafter. At 17.3˚C, the high fertility lasted about three hours, and at 13.6˚C about four hours. Sexual materials perserved at a low temperature such as 9˚C did not shown the high fertility throughout the experiment (Fig. 1). From these facts, it may be pointed out that the high fertility lasts for one to three hours after spawning under regular temperature. Though it is uncertain that the disappearance of the fertility occured earlier in both eggs or sperm after spawning, the results suggest the adequate times of atrificial fertilization in abalone hatchery.
