内容記述 From the results obtained by the oceanogoraphic survey on the warm water masses and their outskirts in the North-eastern sea of Japan from 1970 to 1976 and the data obtained at the same time by the self-recorders of surface temperature and salinity (Plessy's Thermosalinograph 6600T and Tsurumi's Recorder TS-2), the surface layer structures of the transition zones (oceanic fronts) were investigated. The results are as follows: 1) The northern limit line of the large type warm water mass in the mixing area corresponds to the so-called second. Kuroshio front and also to the northern limit of the surface warm water on the thermocline which develops in summer covering the surface layer of the warm water mass. 2) The width of the front in temperature or in salinity at the outer zone of the warm water mass is estimated to be several sea miles, although there is sometimes a slight discrepancy between temperature and salinity. 3) If the large warm water mass cutting off from the Kuroshio current contact with the Oyashio water, the differences between minimum and maximum temperature or salinity at both sides of the frontal zone were more than 5˚C and 1.0% respectively. The differences in the middle or small type warm water mass are smaller than those in the large one. 4) In some cases the records of temperature or salinity on the surface frontal zone of warm water masses show clearly the low temperature band coming from the upwelling of the lower layer water in the minimum temperature or salinity zone. The patterns of the records of temperature and salinity were classified roughly into the following three types: a) no low temperature band appear, b) low temperature band appears, and, c) at the cold or low salinity side of the frontal zone, there appears high temperature or salinity bands adjacent to the cold or low salinity band, in the minimum temperature or salinity zone.
