| 内容記述 | The spawning seasons of the Pacific saury Cololabis saira in the northwestern Pacific Ocean extend from autumn to early summer of the following year. The abundance of saury larvae and juveniles (i.e. the spawning intensity) in each of the spawning seasons show interannual changes. The spawning intensity in autumn and spring fluctuated over a wide range whereas in winter the spawning intensity remained relatively stable compared to the other two seasons. Sauries exploited off Japan include large, medium, and small size fish with extra-large and/or extra-small fish being caught in some years. An examination of the spawning intensity data for the 3 spawning seasons and the size composition data for the fishing season catch from mid-August to mid-December led us to the conclusion that autumn spawned fish correspond to large fish (1 year old), winter spawned fish to medium fish (8-10 months old), and spring spawned fish to small fish (5-7 months old). The growth of the saury examined in rearing experiments and by successive observations of size composition of natural specimens caught between March and September provided further support for this conclusion. | |||||||||||
