There exists little knowledge for the forecasting of fishing-grounds for chub mackerel, Scomber japonicus, in the Sanriku coastal waters (38°-42˚N, 140°-144˚E) in the northwestern Pacific. The present paper describes the characteristic features of "synoptic" hydrographic structures in the vicinity of purse-seine fishing-grounds for chub mackerel and the surrounding meso-scale water-mass arrangement. Temporal and spatial fluctuations of the purse-seine catch for chub mackerel in the Pacific coastal waters east of Japan (35°-43˚N, 140"-147˚E) from July to December in 1967-1986 show the following features. (1) The stock level of the Pacific sub-population of chub mackerel is high and northward increase is recognized in the distributional area in the "good catch years" (1967-1975), and vice versa in the "poor catch years" (1981-1986). (2) The local condition of the fishing-ground formation plays an important role in catch fluctuations in the Sanriku coastal waters. The local hydrographic structure in the vicinity of the fishing-grounds and the surrounding meso-scale water-mass arrangement were analyzed on the basis of data obtained from ship/ satellite-borne observations from September to November in 1984-1988. As a result, the following features are recognized as common. The fishing-grounds for chub mackerel tend to be formed in the vicinity of the "thermoanticline structure", which is produced by the intrusion of the Oyashio cold water into the lower layer of the Tsugaru or the Kuroshio warm water. Placing these features in a working hypothesis, the relationship between the thermal structures of the hydrographic cross-sections and the fishing-grounds in the Sanriku coastal waters in 1967-1986, were investigated. The results show that the hypothesis is valid in any phase of the stock level of the Pacific sub-population of chub mackerel. The relationship between the fluctuation of the meso-scale water-mass arrangement and the geographic distribution of the fishing-grounds were also examined on a year-to-year, seasonal and short term scale basis. These results prove that the formation/displacement of the fishing-grounds can be explained by the fluctuation of the meso-scale water mass arrangement which produces the "thermoanticline structure" in local areas. Finally, it is recommended that this working hypothesis should be included in the fisheries oceanographic law concerning the fishing-ground formation for chub mackerel in the Sanriku coastal waters. Other observations in the present study and current knowlege suport the relationship between the "thermoanticline structure" and the fishing-ground formation for chub mackerel, not only in the Sanriku coastal waters but also in other waters arround Japan, such as Doto, Joban-Kashima, Izu Isels, East-China Seas and San-in. Moreover, this relationship is recognized for Pacific saury and Japanese sardine, however the locations of the fishing-grounds differ on the main thermocline depth, that is the fishing-grounds for saury, mackerel and sardine tend to be formed in the waters near the "top", 5-20 nautical miles from the "top" and farther from the "top" of the "thermoanticline structure" respectively.

本論文は,三陸近海におけるマサバScomberjaponicws まき網漁場の局所的海洋構造の特徴と,そのような海洋構造をもたらす中規模水塊配置を明らかにすることを目的に,漁況資料と海洋観測資料を解析·考察した結果をとりまとめたものである.まず,三陸近海のマサパ漁場に関する具体的な水産海洋学的間題点の抽出を図るために,三陸近海を含む本州東方太平洋近海における1967~1986年のマサバまき網漁船の操業日誌を解析した,その結果,(1)本州東方太平洋近海におけるマサバ太平洋系群は,1967~1975年の好漁時代には資源水準が高く,分布域を最も北にまで拡大しており,1981年の不漁時代には資源水準は著しく低下し分布域も南へ縮小するというマサバ資源の動態を明らかにすると同時に,(2)三陸漁場では,同じ資源水準の時代でも漁場の地理的分布の年による変化が大きく、漁場の地理的分布に明瞭な季節的変化が認められ,短期的な漁場の移動速度に大きながあることから,資源変動だけではなく漁場の海洋環境など局所的な漁場形成条件の変化が,マサバまき網漁の漁況変動要因として重要であると判断した。この判断に基づき,1984~1988年に実施した海洋観測結果を用い,まき網漁場あるいはマサバ魚群が確認された水域の局所的海洋構造の特徴と、そのような海洋構造をもたらす中規模水塊配置を検討した結果,「マサパ漁場は,津軽暖水あるいは黒潮系暖水の下層に親潮系冷水が貫入する中規模水塊配置のもとで出現する水温背斜構造と対応して形成されやすい」という共通性が認められることを示した.この共通性をひとつの作業仮説として位置づけ,次に 1967~1986年の三陸沿岸の水温鉛直断面構造とマサバ漁場形成との対応関係を検討した.その結果,マサバ太平洋系群の資源水準にかかわりなく、いつの時代でも,水温背斜構造と漁場形成との間には基本的な対応関係が認められること,またこの水温背斜構造が津軽暖水あるいは黒潮系暖水の下層に親潮系冷水が貫入する中規模水塊配置のもとで出現することを確認し,好漁時代·変動期·不漁時代にも共通してこの作業仮説が成り立つことを明らかにした.さらに,経年的,季節的あるいは短期的時間スケールごとに,中規模水塊配置の変化と漁場の地理的分布の変化との対応関係を検討し,いずれの時間スケールでも,漁楊の地理的分布の変化が水温背斜構造を出現させる中規模水塊配置の変化で説明できることを明らかにした.以上の検討と考察の結果,上述の作業仮説が検証されたと判断し,この仮説を三陸近海におけるマサバ漁場形成に関する水産海洋学的法則として提起した。三陸近海のマサバ漁場形成に関するこの法則性と,三陸漁場以外の日本周辺海域におけるマサバ漁場の海洋構造に関する知見とを比較·検討し,他海域の漁場でも三陸漁場と同様に水温背斜構造という共通した特徴が認められ,水温背斜構造をもたらす周囲の中規模水塊配置は異なるとはいえ,本論文で提起した作業仮説のうち,「漁場が水温背斜構造と対応して形成される」ことは,三陸近海のみならず広く日本近海で成立する法則であるとみなせることを示した.またそれと同時に,三陸近海における他魚種の漁場の海洋構造とも比較·検討し,サンマやマイワシ漁場も水温背斜構造と対応して形成されるにもかかわらず,種によって漁場形成位置が異なり,水温背斜構造の頂部付近にサソマ,その頂部から主水温躍層が深くなる方へ5~20海里隔たった水域にマサバ,さらに隔たった水域にマイワシ漁場が形成されやすいことを示し,本論文で提起した海洋構造とマサバ漁場形成に関する法則性がマサバに特有なものであることを明らかにした.
