内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Variation in morphological and physiological characteristics among the rotifers, Brachionus plicatilis cultured in nearly all over Japan, is obstacle for progress and spread of the rotifer culture technique. Among the varieties, S-type with pointed anterior spines of lorica and L-type with the obtuse-angled spines are common. On the contrary, cyclomorphosis in size and shape is well known among natural rotifers. Thus, the present study was carried out to examine whether these types are distinctly different strains or the results of cyclomorphosis. The rotifers were cultured year round with baker's yeast as a feed in outdoor 200 ton tank, and for short period in heated indoor tank in winter. Judging from the shape of the spines, it is considered that only L-type appeared during the culture in both the outdoor and the heated indoor tanks. The smallest rotifers which are similar to S-type in size, lorica length 254=26.8µ (205~304µ), width 166.8±12.3µ (140~190µ) appeared during the highest temperature month, July; the largest, lorica length 321±17.2µ (306~347µ), width 225.9±11.1µ (204~245µ) during the lowest, February. Relationship between length (Y) and width (X), in the smallest and the largest, might be represented by the following equation: Y=0.397X+188.6, Y=0.408X+227.2, respectively. The former is round in shape without the pointed anterior spines of lorica, while the latter is rather slender. These phenomena may be resulted from cyclomorphosis of L-type. The change in size of rotifer cultured in heated medium (15~25°C), indicated that seasonal change of water temperature (5.7~31.2°C) was one of the main inducing factor in cyclomorphosis. From these results, the two types are considered to be different strain, and sometimes exist together. In the present rotifer stock, S-type might be decimated by low temperature during winter in the past annual culture in outdoor tanks.
