To establish standard indexes which may be used to diagnose physiological condition of cultured juvenile biuefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus orientalis, 88 wild fish of various sizes (100-1250 g) were captured and their blood constituents and chemical compositions of various parts of the body were analyzed. In these indexes, linear significant (P<0.01) correlations were obtained between body weight and condition factor, hematocrit level, as well as serum protein, cholesterol, neutral fat and creatinine levels. Mean values with standard deviations were shown as the standard levels for hemoglobin, red blood cell count; glucose, phosphate-P, calcium, GOT, GPT, LDH, ALP and LAP in serum which showed no significant correlations with body weight. From groups of fish reared in 25-ton round tanks for 5 weeks, 1.5 months, and 3.5 months, 10, 4, and 10 fish respectively were also collected and their levels of the blood constituents and the chemical compositions were compared with those of wild fish having a similar body weight. Within 5 weeks, cultured fish showed microcytic hypochromic anemia which symptom was observed in all groups of the cultured fish. Also in these fish, almost all enzyme activities in the serum were lower and crude fat levels in the muscles and liver were higher than those of wild fish. Glucose and creatinine contents in the serum, and magnesium contents in the vertebrae of cultured fish were also lower than those of the corresponding wild fish. These results indicate that bluefin tuna may fall in a typical syndrome of cultured fishes such as anemia and high level of body fat in a very short period maybe due to lack of sufficient physical activity. |
