内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Skeletal anomalies of marine and fresh water fishes were studied onsamples collected during the period from 1930 to 1976 to clarify characteristics and distribution of the anomalies in Japan. The results obtained are as follows; 1. The characteristics of skeletal anomalies of fishes Typical skoliosis of cultured yellowtail, Seriola quinqueradiata, fusing osteoclasis of vertebrate and hemal spines and osteoma of cultured red sea bream, Pagurus major were examined by total, partial and micro soft X-ray photography, and histological methods. The most efficient method for the diagnosis of skeletal anomalies of fishes was found to examine samples directly by the total soft X-ray photography. Skeletal anomalies of 17 cases of 12 species collected from the natural water and of 10 cases of 3 species from fish culture farms were examined to know the characteristics of skeletal anomalies. From these studies, it was found that the skull anomalies were caused mainly by deformation and lack of skull bones such as upper and lower jaws and bottom bones of the skull and that the curvature of vertebral column was caused by osteoclasis, and by fusing and shortening of vertebrae. 2. Distribution of skeletal anomalies from 1930 to 1973 in Japan Marine fishes of 239 specimens of 13 species and fresh water fishes of 122 of 13 species showing skeletal anomalies from 1930 to 1973 in Japan were examined. Skeletal anomalies were found in all samples of Mugil cephalus (57 cases) and Lateolabrax japonicus (37 cases) collected from various coasts of Japan and of Carassius auratus (40 cases) collected from the main rivers of Japan. These results indicate that skeletal anomalies of fishes had been widely distributed in the coast and fresh water all over Japan. 3. Investigation of skeletal anomalies in an area of Seto Inland Sea A total of 24,000 fishes of about 90 species were examined by soft X-ray photography. Frequency of skeletal anomalies was 3.48 % in fishes collected from the inner part of Hiro bay, 1.24% from the outer part of Hiro bay, 0.46 % from the common fishery field of the coast of Onomichi city and 5.57 % from the Kurose river. Frequency of osteoclasis and shortening of vertebrae summed up to 57.1 % of total skeletal anomalies of marine fish and 82.0% of that of fresh water fish. 4. Diagnosis of the three cases of mass mortality of fish with skeletal anomalies in natural water and aquaculture farm From the skeletal anomalies and clinical symptoms it was found that the two cases had been caused by a toxicity of some agricultural chemicals and another caused by a functional trouble of fish pump. Thus, the possibility was shown that some of skeletal anomalies can be used as one of the good indicators of water pollution.
