内容記述 The process of gonadal sex differentiation in the flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus was histologically studied by using the fish hatched and cultured in laboratory aquaria under natural water temperature. They were fed on rotifers, nauplii of Artemia, minced sand eel and krill, and commercial pellets for red sea bream as they grew up. At 5.6 mm larva in total length (TL), the primordial germ cell was found between the mesonephric duct and the gut. The genital ridges which contained a few germ cells and somatic cells were found beneath the dorsal peritoneal wall in 7.3 mm TL larva. In 13-18 mm TL larvae, the germ cells in the gonads made gradual multiplication and the gonads migrated to the posterior part of abdominal cavity during their metamorphosis. The gonads elongated into caudal muscle through posterior wall of abdominal cavity at about 30 mm TL stage. The dorsal and ventral edges of these gonads began to extend laterally and they eventually fused to form the presumptive ovarian cavities along the lateral sides of the gonads. Oocytes in early meiosis were first observed from the ovary of 55 mm TL female and the oocytes in the early peri-nucleolus stage were found when the fish were more than 150 mm in TL. In the gonads other than those showing ovarian differentiation, the germ cells remained quiescent and few in number until the fish reached more than 50 mm TL stage. However, the somatic cells and blood vessels were relatively abundant in these presumptive testes when compared to the presumptive ovaries. The multiplication of the spermatogonia and the active spermatogenesis were observed in the testes of 100 mm TL and 200 mm TL males, respectively. These results will be come to a conclusion that sex differentiation in the flounder takes place between 30 to 100 mm TL. The differentiation was occurred at smaller stage in female than in male.
