内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Morphological and electrophoretic observations of the cultivated and wild populations in Japan and selection or crossing experiments on some shell traits were conducted with reference to genetic improvement of the pearl oyster, Pinctada fucata. The population from Namako lagoon of Kagoshima and from Funauki bay of Okinawa were different from other area or regions in the frequencies of types of prismatic layer coloration and allele at four loci and in shell shape; and the results from some inbreeding and crossing experiments suggest much of the difference to be inherited. However, when using pearl production experiment and observations of gonad development as criteria, in addition to the above methods, the differences among the populations from other area were few. The results of selection experiments on shell width suggested that heritability of the trait was about 0.22-0.25 and that selective breeding of the trait would be effective also for other shell traits, such as shell height and shell weight. The pearl oysters whose nacre include no yellow pigments could be bred by selective breeding, which might contribute to the production of the pearls without yellow pigments. Some crossing experiments on the prismatic layer coloration showed that red may be dominant over yellow and yellow dominant over other common type. The genetic variability and gene frequencies were analysed at three loci in two strains selected for 4-5 generations, and heterogygosity and frequency distribution of genes in these strains were suggested to be affected by inbreeding. Hybridization experiments were conducted using different local strains or selection lines in order to improve shell traits and mortality, and crossing plans proposed which include selection. In reviewing the history and present status of seeds production of pearl oysters in Japan, and the results of the present study, breeding programs of the animals were proposed for the stable production of superior pearls.
